Positions Berlin Art Fair anchors the commercial programme. Major institutions including Hamburger Bahnhof, KW Institute, Berlinische Galerie, Gropius Bau and Schinkel Pavillon all participate. Most museum entry and gallery openings are free during the week. Plan in days, not in hours.
How to Plan Your Berlin Art Week
Arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. Check into accommodation. Start with the institutional shows in Mitte. Walk Auguststraße and Linienstraße for the main galleries. Thursday is the big opening night, when most galleries open at the same time. Expect to walk a lot. Wear comfortable shoes. On Friday, devote a half day to either Kreuzberg or Neukölln depending on what is opening. Saturday belongs to the art fairs. Sunday is for brunch, final gallery loops and the closing programmes. Anywhere in that week, build in a Clay Night sculpting evening to break the looking with the making.
Where to Look · The Institutions and Galleries
The non negotiable institutions include Hamburger Bahnhof, KW Institute for Contemporary Art on Auguststraße, the Berlinische Galerie for its strong Berlin focus, Gropius Bau in Kreuzberg for major international shows, the Schinkel Pavillon for small, consistently strong programming, and the Neue Nationalgalerie inside the Mies van der Rohe building. For commercial galleries with the most consistent programme, the names to follow are Esther Schipper, Sprüth Magers, Galerie Max Hetzler, Galerie Eigen + Art, Capitain Petzel, Galerie Buchholz, Barbara Wien and Buchmann Galerie.

Clay Night is a life model sculpting session that has been running across Europe for over eleven years. You sit at a bench, a live model takes their pose, and over the course of about three hours you shape a figure in clay. No experience needed. Tools and clay provided. The approach is simple: connect people to listening with their eyes.
